Earlier in the year, I was experimenting with Chai mixed with cocoa and was pretty pleased with the results. It seems I’m not the only person thinking about tea and chocolate together in the same cup…
You know how sometimes, you’re standing in line at the grocery store check out, just minding your own business? Maybe, possibly, you’re pretending not to notice the tabloid headlines in the magazine rack next to you, but really, you’re totally reading them.
And then… completely without warning… a chocolate bar jumps off the rack and into your shopping basket.
I have no idea how this happens but, it happens to me all the time. All the time.
Last weekend, I was at Urban Fare – the “fancy” grocery store on Vancouver’s pricey Alberni Street. Their checkout chocolate bar display is about 100 notches above your regular grocery store display.
And that is how The Tea Room’s Raspberry Rooibos Drinking Chocolate wound up in my shopping basket. It just fell off the display and BAM! I was buying it. I had no idea how much it cost until I left the store and read my bill.
$12.95. For 145 grams.
But these things happen, and when they do, you need to make the best of them!
The Tea Room’s Raspberry Rooibos Drinking Chocolate is a blend of unsweetened chocolate, cocoa powder, cane sugar and raspberry rooibos tea. You can pronounce all the ingredients and, they’re all certified organic. The chocolate is actually shaved chocolate – 60% dark, which I really liked – it melted so nicely when I made my first cup.
I followed the directions exactly and made my version with milk on the stove. Next time I’ll probably cheat and try it in the microwave and make it with soy milk just to see how well it works.
It was delicious – creamy, very chocolatey with a nice raspberry flavour. The rooibos tea flavour was there but in a subtle way. I was a little worried it would overpower the chocolate or be completely undetectable but it did neither. For me, it was a perfect blend of tea and chocolate.
This isn’t my first experience with The Team Room Chocolate. And truth be told, I bought two more of their chocolate bars this week which I’ll report back on soon!
I’m going to consider the drinking chocolate to be a rather lovely Christmas present to myself, even if it totally jumped into my shopping basked without being asked. It’s going to be lovingly doled out through December when I need something warm and chocolatey with a little extra in it!
What about you – have you tried blending tea and chocolate yet? What do you think?
I’m glad that Chocolate jumps out into your basket too. I thought I was the only one who suffered from that particular infliction. I definitely need to add this to my list for Santa, if I don’t find it myself first of course. Beautiful photographs and an amazing product review. Thank you 🙂
Melissa, this looks so delicious and cozy, love all those gorgeous photos! ?
I too cannot resist overly friendly chocolate that begs to come home with me and I LOVE tea but have never been too crazy about the two together in the same cup but shaved chocolate with rooibos … I’m going to be on the lookout for The Tea Room Chocolate.
Your tea and chocolate posts always reel me in. I haven’t had the Tea Room’s drinking chocolate, but they have some at Gourmet Warehouse that’s also flaked – it makes a perfect cup. Earl Grey tea truffles are the only chocolate thing I’ve made with chocolate myself, but I’ve certainly eaten my fair share of chocolate infused with various kinds of tea. Ahem…
Oh man, stuff falls into my shopping cart all the time too! What’s up with that? Lol!
I have never tried chocolate and tea together, but what a lovely idea! Thanks for the inspiration.
I love your photos!
