With the typical Canadian opener of “I’m Sorry”, I apologize to all my non-Canadian readers. You see, today is Canada Day! Canada’s 146th birthday. We’re kind of a baby in the grand scheme of country birthdays.
I love that our birthday is July 1st. It’s the weekend the country wakes up fully from it’s long winter’s nap. Cottages are opened, canoes and kayaks are put in the water, campfires are lit, street festivals happen, flip flops and fireworks, camping and road trips, cherries and berries, peaches and apricots. Fishing, watermelon and corn on the cob. Lakes and oceans with their beaches beckoning for picnics and a swim.
If you want to eat something that’s all Canadian, then you need to have butter tarts. If you want them to have a summer kick, make rhubarb butter tarts. Or… my personal favourite, Nanaimo Bars. Or, if you just want something totally decadent and perfectly summery, wherever you are, you MUST have a S’mores Mars bar. It’s impossible to eat just one from the pan.
I love being Canadian and, having lived outside of Canada, I don’t for one second take for granted how freaking lucky me and my fellow Canadians are. I can’t even articulate how Canada makes me feel. She’s not perfect but, she’s home. And I am happy for that.
And I leave you with this… because you have no idea how it resonated with Canadians when it came out…
Happy Canada Day Melissa. I really enjoyed reading your post and as a fellow Canadian, watching the video gave me goose bumps. Having spent some time in a country where there were line-ups to buy food at that time, made me realize how blessed I was to live in this great country.
I am proud to be Canadian,
I hope you had a great Canada Day! I celebrated with fireworks and poutine 😀
