I don’t think it comes as any surprise to anyone who follows along here that I have a sweet tooth, especially for chocolate. Who doesn’t like chocolate??
Crazy people, that’s who.
I was lamenting missing London and English treats and lo and behold, Sean from Sean’s Adventures in Flavortown came to my rescue by suggesting I check out The Candy Aisle on Robson Street the next time I was downtown. So I did just that and I hit paydirt!
They have so much stuff! Penny candy, novelty candy, imports, every flavour of jellybellies known to man and stuff I haven’t seen since I was a little kid!
The first indication that I was in heaven was finding Baby Ruths (which are available in Canada but you have to hunt for them), a reminder from my high school days when we would get cheap gas in the States at Point Roberts or Blaine and stock up on US candy bars. I bought one (just one! restraint!)
And then… the elusive coconut M&M! I have only ever seen these once before, in Las Vegas at the M&M store. And I have been to that store several times since, looking for them only to be thwarted… well take THAT Las Vegas. Ha!
And then I found all the English candy and sweets, including Galaxy Minstrels. Ooooo but I love these little chocolate candy coated buttons! They had so many of my favourites that it was hard to choose and I was on a budget. I literally felt like a little kid clutching their allowance, not knowing what to pick!
But then it didn’t matter because I spotted them… my all time favourite chocolate bar…
Orange Aero Bars!!!! The wrapper says “New” but that is just a marketing ploy. Trust me, these babies have been around since I was a kid. My English relatives have been sending me parcels of these for decades. That’s right… decades! On rare occasions, they will be released as a special edition in Canada and back in my retail days when I did candy purchasing, I have been known to purchase them by the case and store them in my freezer! (addicted much??)
I quizzed the man behind the counter as to whether or not they carried them all the time and he sadly informed me that no, they didn’t – only when they were able to get their hands on them. Don’t worry, I will be haunting them!! And for now, I have two large family bars in my freezer being portioned out in individual squares. The should last me a month or so…
So big thanks to Sean for making my YEAR! (I know… that’s sad. It’s chocolate.) I haven’t had one of these in almost 4 years!
Oh now I would be in chocolate heaven! I haven’t had Minstrels.in such a long time, or real Smarties (not the sugar candy they call Smarties here in the US.)
Smarties? if I’d known that I’d have sent some down to you when I sent your book! I love Smarties! We have the sugar ones here as well but we call them Rockets. 🙂
Ah now and if they had had a Violet Crumble I would be making a beeline there before my flight tomorrow 😉 Now THERE’S something you need to try! (PS: I bought many bags of cocount M&Ms back with me from Washington!!!)
oh you found them in Washington? that’s good to know. I think they’re a special ed that comes out now and then. I’d still rather go downtown to get them 🙂
Oh the coconut ones are goooood!! I tried the Cinnamon M&M’s, they are not that great. I heard they were also coming out with white chocolate M&M’s.
I like the Terry’s Chocolate Orange, so the Areo Orange sounds wonderful! There must be some candy store in Toronto that has these random goodies.
Cinnamon M&Ms?? I did not know about those… I wonder how they would be? I know they made fancy ones a while back that were really expensive and came in a box but they didn’t appeal to me too much.
I love orange and chocolate 🙂 You must see if you can find Jaffa Bars or Jaffa Cakes!
Oh thank you for the tip! And the coconut m&ms…you are awesome. I can’t believe how scrumptious you make all of those candies look! You have a wonderful gift.
awww… thx C! I’m glad you enjoyed them – I couldn’t not buy you a bag!
OMIGOSH… You found the orange Aero bars. Now I am officially jealous of you!!
Orange Aero Bars?? Are those like Crunchies? Yum! Crunchies are a fave of mine! I can find them here in the US but they taste so much better when they come from the UK : )
Glad you hit pay dirt!
Oh I love Crunchies too, but no, Aeros are completely different. The is usually chocolate with bubbles in it but they make specialty ones with mint, orange, caramel, etc. The orange are near impossible to find in N. America. Hershey is making something similar now that is a copycat – I think it’s called the Air. But it won’t be as good 😉
