Time to Harvest Tomatoes

tomatoes after harvest

Tomatoes - all different shapes, sizes and shades of red

It is that wonderful time of year when farmer’s markets, community gardens and your own plot of land in the backyard or on the patio are producing like crazy. Tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, green beans, squash, and the ever present zucchini are everywhere.

My favourite is and always has been the tomato. So many different varieties, sizes, and colours. Beautiful heirloom varieties or a big red juicy beefsteak, I love them all. September is the month I gorge myself on tomato sandwiches, salads, salsas, grilled tomatoes, fried green tomatoes, little cherry tomatoes fresh off the vine and warm from the sun and homemade pasta sauces.

Just waiting to be bitten into...

Nothing compares to the smell and taste of a fresh, homegrown tomato. Stay tuned tomorrow for a post on my “famous” (haha) tomato meat sauce that is easily freezable, can be cooked quickly or simmered for a long time for added flavour and is soooo easy to make variations on.

    The first picture is wonderful.
I also love tomatos…. and even on our balcony we can grow some. Even though the weather has clearly abandoned any idea of summer, at least we have our tomato plants full of tomatos.
